The Play Store works like a search engine. This is free.
About 65% of installs begin with a search. If you show up for the words people type, the Play Store sends you users for free. This is called ASO: making your title, short description, and full description match what people search for. The App Store works the same way.
Think about how you found the last app you installed. You opened the store, typed something like "sleep tracker" or "budget app", and tapped one of the first few results. That is what almost everyone does; the numbers below show it. Search is bigger than every other source combined. So before social media, before ads, before anything: when someone types the words that describe your app, you need to be one of the results they see.
Where installs come from
Write a listing that ranks in search
How does the store decide who ranks? Mostly from the words in your listing. The title counts the most, the short description next, and the full description still matters. The store reads those fields, matches them against what people type, and ranks the apps that both match and convert higher. Which means ranking is not a mystery or a lottery. It is a writing task: choose the words you want to be found for, then put them where the store looks.
Pick one keyword that many people search and that you can really rank for. Skip huge words like "game" or "fitness"; big companies own those. Then build your listing around your keyword:
- Put the keyword in your title.
- Repeat it naturally in the short description.
- Weave it and close variations through the full description, without stuffing.
A concrete example. If you built a habit tracker, "habit tracker" alone is probably too big: the top results have millions of installs and years of reviews. But "simple habit tracker", "habit tracker widget", or "habit tracker for students" are searches real people type where you can actually win. Ranking #3 for a small keyword beats ranking #200 for a big one, because page one is the only page anyone sees.
✦ Easiest way · ReachFront
The ASO Generator writes a ready-to-use listing around your keyword in under a minute. The free Score Checker gives it a score from 0 to 100 and shows what to fix before you upload.
Do it yourself · more work
Look at other apps' listings, guess your keywords, write a few versions by hand, and check the character limits yourself. It works, but it is slower, and you cannot see what really ranks.
Do it now: a listing that ranks, in ~10 minutes
- 1Get your baseline. Paste your current listing into the free ASO Score Checker. Your score and the failing checks are your to-do list.
- 2Pick your keyword. Search candidates in Keyword Research and choose one with real volume and a difficulty you can win.
- 3Generate. Give the ASO Generator your app brief and keyword. It writes the title, short description, and full description inside every character limit.
- 4Loop. Re-score the generated listing, fix what it flags, and stop at 80+. Then upload to Play Console.
